Archaeological Prospection 1995
Provisional Programme
Tuesday 12th September
- 10.30am
Arrival and coffee
- 11.00am
Defining Problems and Suggesting Solutions in Shallow Depth
Determination
This session will identify the potential and prospects of
defining archaeological depths using a variety of tools. Papers
will include technical information and case studies using electrical
imaging and pseudosections, multi-probe systems, acoustics, seismics
and ground penetrating radar. A variety of analytical techniques
to provide depth sections and 'time slices' will be evaluated
in their archaeological context.
- 1.00pm
Lunch and poster displays
- 2.00pm
The Interplay between Display and Interpretation
As data sets collected during archaeological work are increasing
in size, the need for sophisticated display and interpretation
options becomes more critical. This session will revolve around
the need to visualise data sets, often combining numerous correlated,
or complementary, techniques. In particular, papers will concentrate
on the interplay between display and interpretation, highlighted
by the introduction of sophisticated neural network applications,
as well as data manipulation and correlation within customised
packages.
- 5.30pm
Summing up and final discussion
- 7.00pm
Wine Reception followed by dinner
Wednesday 13th September
- 9.00am
Arrival and coffee
- 9.30am
Aspects of Remote Sensing in Archaeology
Remote sensing has had long and distinguished use in archaeology.
The papers in this session will identify areas for integration
between the various strands of remote sensing. Of particular interest
will be the advances in data manipulation and the advantages gained
in the interpretation of archaeological data.
- Soil Science in Prospection
Aspects of soil science have become particularly important
in the assessment of proposed large developments and in the minutiae
of 'how techniques work'. The papers in this session will explore
these themes and illustrate the integration of soil science within
the broader archaeological framework.
- 12.30pm
Lunch and poster displays
- 1.30pm
Archaeological Prospection in Action
This session will concentrate on the application of prospection
techniques to specific archaeological questions and will include
a number of case studies.
- Open Forum
The conference will conclude with a discussion of the setting
and maintenance of standards within archaeological prospection.
- 5.30pm
Conference closes
Thursday 14th September
- Field trip. Please see 'Practical Details'.
